LA, Long Beach, Oakland ports mull US$35-$100/TEU air pollut

A $35 - $100 per TEU tax is being considered at this week's Long Beach's annual "Pulse of the Ports: Peak Season Forecast", reports Modern Materials Handling, of Framingham, Massachusetts.
News came in a Pacific Maritime Shipping Association's (PMSA) monthly "West Coast Trade Report," as an alert to shippers that California's South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD) had proposed two different container taxes through Long Beach, Los Angeles, and Oakland.
The state tax is expected to raise $385 million to $1.1 billion under a higher rate of $100 per TEU. Which course the SCAQMD is likely to pursue is uncertain, said the PMSA report.
According to PMSA president, John McLaurin, the air district first pitched the $35 per TEU proposal with state legislators in late February. As part of that effort, the SCAQMD noted that the $385 million would be collected every year.
Said Mr McLaurin: "While their Sacramento efforts were underway to introduce a bill implementing the $35 per TEU fee, the SCAQMD Legislative Committee held a special meeting where it adopted a recommendation to consider a $100 per TEU container fee at Los Angeles, Long Beach and Oakland."
