MALYASIA's main port of Klang recorded 10.8 per cent growth in 2016 to 13.2 million TEU, edging closer to being ranked among the world's top ten container ports.

The Malaysian gateway finished the year in 11th place in the World Container League, up from 12th in 2015, partly on the back of solid growth in transshipment volumes.

The port handled 9.1 million TEU of transshipment volumes in 2016, up 14.3 per cent from eight million TEU in 2015. Within this total, Northport handled 1.7 million TEU, and Westports handled 7.4 million TEU, port authorities said.

Overall, the smaller terminal of Northport handled 3.2 million TEU, while Westports handled 10 million TEU in 2016.

"The positive growth of port Klang is attributed to several factors, mainly its efficient and productive terminal operators, strong support of port Klang's shipping and logistics community and the port's supply driven port facilities as well as advanced state of the art cargo handling equipment," the port authority was cited as saying in a report by Seatrade Maritime News.
