DENMARK's Maersk Line has started calling at the port of Bushehr in Iran, providing shippers with an alternative to Bandar Abbas for transporting cargo, including reefers for perishable products, to and from the Middle East nation.

While Bandar Abbas is located near the Strait of Hormuz, Bushehr is located further up the Persian Gulf and is a short distance to Qatar, Bahrain, as well as certain ports of Saudi Arabia, reported American Shipper.

"Bushehr is the largest and most important port for transportation of commercial goods within the Bushehr province in Iran. With a total throughput of seven million tonnes, this port is capable of offering services for all containerised cargoes, and most significantly refrigerated products," said Maersk.

The port features 400 reefer plugs and cold-storage warehouses with a total capacity of 5,000 tonnes for refrigerated and temperature-sensitive cargo. Freight moving to and from Bushehr is transshipped through Jebel Ali in the United Arab Emirates.
