THE world's container shipping industry is beyond a doubt dominated by the three mega shipping alliances, which collectively account for 44 per cent of the global box fleet capacity worth US$130 billion, according to VesselsValue.com.

In the number one spot is the Ocean Alliance with 539 vessels for a total capacity of 4.08 million TEU valued at $23.9 billion.

China Cosco Shipping Corp (COSCOCS) is the largest member in the alliance with 203 vessels for a combined capacity of 1.6 million TEU.

CMA CGM together with newly acquired APL add to the Ocean Alliance 155 vessels with a total capacity of 1.2 million TEU valued at $7.3 billion, reported London's Container Shipping & Trade.

Ocean Alliance is expected to control the largest market share on the Far East-North America transpacific route, with a 39 per cent share of the current capacity deployed on the trade.

The Alliance holds a 35 per cent share of capacity on this trade lane, while 2M holds 19 per cent and the remaining seven per cent is taken by smaller non-alliance carriers, according to Alphaliner.

In second place comes 2M. Following the addition of HMM, 2M now has 483 vessels with a total of 3.3 million TEU worth $16.62 billion, according to VesselsValue.

HMM only contributes 18 vessels of 135,898 TEU combined. This is insignificant compared with 268 box ships at 1.9 million TEU for Maersk Line and MSC's 197 ships for a total 1.2 million TEU.

The Alliance stands at number three and has a total of 347 vessels, at 2.7 million TEU, worth $16.61 billion. The biggest members in The Alliance are the merged Hapag-Lloyd and UASC which combined contribute 121 vessels for a total of 1.07 million TEU valued at $6.6 billion.

NYK Line is the second largest member with 68 vessels for a total of 507,020 TEU valued at $3.02 billion.

Barely extant Hanjin Shipping is the fifth smallest member in The Alliance, contributing 39 ships for a total capacity of 283,286 TEU valued at $1.5 billion.
